Workplace Rules – Sometimes You are the Culture.

Rules in the workplace are set by whatever organization it is who pays you.  The rules are not always things that make sense, and are often fun to joke around about.  Rules are what hold the universe together and keep us from falling into chaos and darkness. I have my own set of workplace rules as well, I use them to keep it fun.  Yes, rules are important and playing by them is necessary, but no one likes to work in the coal mines, so why make them.

  1. Any employee doing something good, even if it happens to be something they were told to do – or that is in their normal job description should be praised and thanked.
  2. Personal conversations while working are allowed, so long as it doesn’t interfere with the work. This builds comraderie and establishes a connection between team members that helps them BE a Team.
  3. Whenever possible, teach others what you are doing.  The more they know how to do the better they feel about their jobs. Trust goes both ways, if you want it, give it.
  4. When changes at work happen make sure everyone knows why. People are more likely to do what’s needed when they understand the reason.
  5. Always do the best you can to help out your coworkers. Cover when you can, help when you can and ask how it turned out.
  6. Celebrate success, sounds like an actual rule. Do it anyway, and do it consistently. The people who struggle with any part of the work need to be appreciated for effort. Not everyone is strong in the same areas, but everyone can be appreciated the same way.
  7. There is nothing wrong with having fun at work.  Keep it clean, appropriate and involve everyone.
  8. Check in with people during the day.  Not with a task or more work, just with a kind word, a joke, or a smile.
  9. Even when people do badly, be honest and don’t wait. You have to trust that they will do the right thing. They have to trust that you will let them know, and help them when they don’t.
  10. Be a mentor to all you can, and accept that they can be to you as well.
