Well now, finally it happened. Was a long road here it seems to me. In case you did not know this was the fourth attempt to get this bill passed. NY is the sixth state to enact such a law. This afternoon I received an email asking if I would be willing to write an op piece against the passing of this bill, I declined. Yes, I know they were going to pay me for it, and yes I’m sure I could get some attention yelling and screaming about whatever ridiculous thing I thought up. Problem is I think this is a long overdue. The fact that it passed 33 to 29 concerns me just a bit. Still it passed so I suppose those of us who wanted it to should be grateful. However, 33 to 29, it bothers me. Why does it matter to those 29 people? What possible harm can allowing two people who love one another to marry? Well, I went and looked it up for you the biggest issue, at least this time around was making exemptions for religious organizations not to have to perform the ceremonies. Not that the Govt ever could have forced them to do it in the first place. So they argued about something that couldn’t occur without violating the First Amendment. Way to go wasting my money folks. The final hurdle was overcome when a clause was added that says if any part of the act is found to be invalid by a court of law, then it all is. Which I bet bites someone in the ass eventually. Guess we shall see. Still it’s a good day.
So a special mention here for Mark Grisanti (R-Buffalo), who is a practicing Catholic he said, “I cannot legally come up with an argument against same-sex marriage.” Good for you. If I could I would vote for you next election. Here’s hoping the Catholic Church doesn’t excommunicate you for it.
For those of you listening to the news and hearing the people paid to differ about how this will destroy families? I ask this, Who’s yours? No, then shhhh…. Or about how we can’t afford this? How can we not afford to do the right thing, If we did the right thing with the tax code, we could afford more so again Shhhh… My favorite though, I laugh at this one. Many religious organizations say that It’s against God. Ok sure, the Bible says it, I learned it in School as a child. It also says polygamy is fine, Slavery is fine, and so is a host of other things. Obviously, it Isn’t fine for those two things to happen anymore but hey let’s draw a line in the sand on this one. Oh and the talking heads on TV saying all kinds of things about the bill, 90% of it is untrue the Bill isn’t that long go read it instead of listening to your favorite reporter, or as I call them fear mongers report on what you’re afraid of rather than what’s actually true.
So anyway here’s to all of you loving couples out there who can finally have what shouldn’t have been denied to you by your government in the first place, at least in here in NY. New Jersey is next they just had a Bill proposed a few days before this, Here’s to it passing as well, hopefully faster than NY’s did.
